Process

This project was a fun exploration that ended in a unique and eye catching result. At the start I was simply exploring the “loft” tool in my CAD software to see what limits there were. As I began to explore other tools like patterns etc I began to create a pleated and lofted shape. The more I looked at it the more I began to like the shape I had accidently created. I saw potential to make it into a fixture of the home so using my 3D printer I attempted to bring this shape into reality.

Creation

Using a specific parameter in my 3D printing software called “spiralize outer contour” I was able to print this model so that it was only one layer thick. This meant that light could easily diffuse through the this exterior and it ended up providing a soft white glow which was perfect for the application I had in mind.

Final Design

In the end, after 24 hours the print did not fully complete. However what I was left with was more than usable and turned out to be a great proof of concept for future projects. I hope to return to this concept one day and create other lamps in multiple sizes and shapes for around my home.
