Core Concept
This project was designed to simplify an experience we all shared during the COVID-19 pandemic: testing for illnesses. I felt the current methods for testing were illogical and counterintuitive, and so I set out to find a more ubiquitous touchpoint we could all share and be familiar with while simultaneously improving dental hygiene.
Features
01) Pod System
The Pod system enables users to test for various health issues, including diseases like COVID-19 as well as hereditary conditions like Alzheimer's.
02) Cleaning and Testing
This component sprays reactants on the toothbrush, analyzes them under a microscope, and then uses high temperature steam to clean it.
03) Fluid Management
A drawer hidden in the base collect any excess fluid for later disposal. This ensures the unit will always be clean and ready to use.
04) Interactive Display
This projections display allows user to make basic interactions with the product if a mobile device isn’t easily available.
05) Swappable Heads
Swappable heads minimize waste. Reuse the base, and add customization with different colors.
06) Signaling LEDs
LEDS signal urgent changes to user; usage errors, bluetooth status, maintenance and more.
Animation
Ideation and Sketching
Form
This form was ideal since it had a minimal countertop size, allowed for secure testing behind a sealed door, and had ample space inside to accommodate all the technical components.
Prototyping
All prototyping was done in house (in my house). I was able to use my expertise in 3D printing to be able to rapidly prototype my CAD models. This enabled me to quickly test things like ergonomics, fitments and mechanisms. This process taught me a lot about how to optimize hand held items for a range of motions.
