Rocking Chair \\
Mission
This project was a free exploration in furniture design that let students design anything they wanted. I chose to create a rocking chair because I think they are attractive and special, even though they are often overlooked in furniture design. The main drawback of rocking chairs is that they are often large and hard to move. So, with that in mind, I decided to try and solve that issue by creating a rocking chair that is both easy to put together and can be packed flat for shipping or storage.
Process
When I first created this chair, I wanted it to be interesting. I like to push boundaries and create unique designs when I can. My professors had questions about how the chair would sit when not being used, so I made a scale version using a 3D printer to test it out. This model helped me test the strength of the connections and see how the chair would work in practice. It was a useful process that allowed me to improve my concept and explore new ideas.
Sketching and Exploration
This project was special to my portfolio because I experimented with both computer-aided design (CAD) and sketching to explore its shape. Right from the beginning, I was certain about a few things. I wanted to use wood for the finish because it adds quality and is sustainable. Additionally, I understood that the chair needed to be visually appealing and functional, so I focused on designing it to be both beautiful and useful. Using CAD for my design allowed me to visualize how wood grain would follow a form in the final product.
